Controlling hypoglycemia and blood sugar levels through diet, vitamin and herbal supplementation

Hypoglycemia is a condition where the body’s blood sugar levels drop too low for the body to carry out normal activities. It is most often seen in adults as a side effect of diabetes treatments, but it can occur because of medications, diseases, hormone deficiencies, tumors, or enzyme deficiencies.

The most common symptoms of hypoglycemia are feeling anxious or weak, nervousness, troubles speaking, confusion, light-headedness, dizziness, hunger, shaking, perspiration, feeling tired when you wake up, crying out and having nightmares while sleeping. If there are severe drops in your blood sugar level you can also lose consciousness. You should get to know how your body reacts to low levels of glucose so that you can increase your sugar level before you lose consciousness.

Diabetics can suffer from hypoglycemia because of too much insulin, increased exercise, and excessive drinking. People who are not diabetic and suffer from hypoglycemia can have one of two types of hypoglycemia: reactive and fasting hypoglycemia.

In reactive hypoglycemia you start showing symptoms within four hours of eating. The causes for reactive hypoglycemia are not completely known. To help reduce the symptoms it is best to eat small meals or snacks every three hours, avoid or limit sugary foods, and exercise on a regular basis.

In fasting hypoglycemia blood sugar levels drop below 50 after exercising, between meals, or while sleeping. This type of hypoglycemia is caused by illness, alcohol, tumors, medications, and some kinds of disorders that are usually diagnosed in childhood.

There are a few fast ways to increase your blood sugar level and decrease the symptoms of hypoglycemia. These are: drinking about a half a cup of fruit juice or soda pop, a cup of milk, five or six pieces of hard candy or one to two teaspoons of sugar or honey. These will only help for a short time you will want to eat a small meal or some other snack a little later.
