Holistic medicine involves living a way of life that embraces a person's mental, emotional, social and spiritual health and well being
Holistic medicine is an alternative, all-inclusive approach to healing. In
holistic medicine more than just physical health is considered. Holistic health
means that a persons mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health along with
physical health are all considered a part of achieving well being.
Holistic health control is based on a theory that was expressed well by Socrates; “the
part can never be well unless the whole is well.” From this it is seen how
holistic health is less centered around treating an illness and more focused on
healing the whole person. Holistic healing is more than just a therapy or a way
of healing. It is a lifestyle, which also includes diet choices, herbal
remedies, meditation, and other natural ways of gaining optimum health.
Although holistic integrated medicine can trace its roots back almost 5,000 years, modern
studies are also proving its effectiveness. The U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention reported that there are certain key factors that
contribute to overall health. Genetics account for 18%, environment for 19%,
medical care for 10% and lifestyle choices for 53%. From this it is obvious that
a holistic health lifestyle is the biggest factor in gaining good health.
The basic parts of holistic health control include making good choices in food and
nutrition, reducing stress, avoiding unhealthy substances, adequate sleep,
exercise, loving relationships, creative expression, and spirituality. Choices
in food and nutrition should lean more towards the natural foods, but this
should be achieved as a part of your diet slowly so that it becomes a habit of
the way you eat. Some of the most commonly used stress reducing practices are
meditation, yoga, acupuncture, messages, dancing, and exercise.
If holistic healing or holistic health is something you are interested in trying
it is best to discuss what you need to do with a holistic health practitioner and doing plenty of your own research to find the best options for your needs.
