Barley grass and green food supplements are packed with high concentrations of vitamins and minerals and should be a daily part of your diet

Barley grass is a green grass that provides numerous vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, chlorophyll, iron, copper, phosphorous, folic acid, beta-carotene, and a-glucan a fiber that can help lower cholesterol.

The supplement is derived from the young green growing part of the grass. Many people believe that because barley grass contains numerous vitamins and minerals in high amounts, that it is a kind of heal all. That believe is generally correct. Barley grass does contain high levels of vitamins and minerals. There is 11 times more calcium in barley grass than in cow’s milk, 7 times more vitamin C than is found in oranges, and 5 times the iron that is found in spinach.

Barley grass is often referred to as a green food supplement. Green foods are a group of grains that include: barley, wheat, oat, alfalfa, spirulina, and chlorella. The benefits claimed by supporters of whole green food supplements are varied such as:

  • fights cancer
  • detoxify pollutants
  • lower cholesterol
  • protect against radiation
  • help digestion,
  • fight tooth decay
  • slow graying of hair
  • healthy skin
  • get rid of bad breath
  • boost energy
  • lower blood pressure.

However little research has been done on green food supplements so there is no guarantee that all of these claims are true. The most likely claim is that they help fight cancer because chlorophyll is known to have antimutagenic properties. This means that chlorophyll helps stop cell mutations.

Green food supplements come in tablet, powder and juice forms. The common dosage is about 350 mg daily. There have been no adverse affects reported from taking barley grass or green food supplements. However, as a precaution it is suggested that pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid whole green food supplements. Whole green food may also contain high amounts of vitamin K so people taking Warfarin are also advised to be careful when taking green food supplements.
