For jittery nerves Valerian calms, soothes and promotes sleep
Valerian is an herb known for its sedating effect. As a result
it is most often taken for insomnia, stress, and anxiety relief.
Valerian root is a perennial plant that grows in North America, Europe, and Asia. Valerian has an odor that many people consider unpleasant. It
works as a mild, non-habit forming sedative and is believed to be a natural
stress reliever. For this reason it has gained great popularity throughout Germany,
France, Belgium and the United States.
Many claims are made about Valerian’s benefits. Scientific studies have been done on Valerian and reducing the effects of insomnia in
patients. In three of the studies, a larger number of those who took Valerian root supplements before bed fell asleep faster. However other studies have been
done which came to the exact opposite conclusion, so at this point the scientific evidence is inconclusive. Valerian is also believed to reduce
nervousness, tension, stomach cramps, and improve the digestive system. Japanese Valerian shows signs of working as an antidepressant, however studies have not
yet been done on humans.
Valerian side effects are not noticeable or very slight if the recommended dosage is taken. If taken during the day many people experience
drowsiness. Extremely large doses of Valerian herb can cause dizziness, excitability, blurry vision, nausea, and restlessness. Alcohol and Valerian
should not be taken at the same time, and women who are breastfeeding or pregnant should not take
it.
Valerian tea is made from dried Valerian root and rhizomes. The tea is most often taken to help
relax and calm nerves. For people suffering
from insomnia the tablet form is often the preferred way of receiving the correct dosage. The tablet is also preferred because the rank smell of Valerian
can’t be noticed in this form.
Often Red Valerian is confused with Valerian, however, Red Valerian has not been found to have any medicinal properties and there is no support to show that it works like Valerian.
