Studies indicate shark liver oil may aid in cancer treatment

Shark liver oil has been used as a preventative and therapeutic supplement for years. For centuries the Japanese referred to shark liver oil as a cure all. Today, studies indicate that shark liver oil may work as an alternative cancer treatment, boost the immune system and promote a healthy heart.

Scientists believe shark liver oil works as an immune system supplement because of compounds known as alkylglycerols. Alkylglycerols have shown in tests on animals to promote the immune system however, no studies have yet been done on humans.

Early studies have shown that shark liver oil and fish oils in general may help fight cancer because of a substance found in the oils called squalamine, but Doctors caution that these supplements should not be the only treatment being used. If shark liver oil is something that a cancer patient would like to try, it should be taken along with conventional cancer treatments.

Shark liver oil also contains relatively high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which are a type of fatty acid that helps promote a good healthy heart. Because very few studies have been done on humans there are no generalized dosage recommendations. Use common sense when taking shark liver oils, and don’t take more then the recommended dosage on the bottle. You should also always be sure to consult your doctor. As a work of caution, some shark liver oil supplements also have high amounts of vitamin A which can be toxic and cause birth defects. Pregnant or nursing women should keep this in mind when purchasing shark oil supplements. It is also recommended that you take shark liver supplements with meals since it increases absorption and decreases the risk of stomach upset.
