Healing properties of borage oil
Borage oil is derived from the seeds of the borage plant.
It is claimed to treat many of the same ailments as evening primrose oil such as joint pain
relief, PMS, eczema, acne, rosacea, gout, and works as an
anti-inflammatory.
Borage contains higher amounts of GLA than
evening primrose oil. GLA is classed as a fatty acid but is not among the
essential
fatty acids because our bodies can produce GLA from linoleic acid. GLA supplements are supposed to help reduce inflammation however borage oil contains
other fatty acids that may interfere with the absorption of GLA. There is also a risk of toxins getting into GLA supplements that may cause unwanted side effects
if the supplement is taken over a long period of time. There have been fewer studies done on the effect of borage oil and less is known about borage
oil than evening primrose oil. This is why many people often prefer evening primrose oil as a
primary source of GLA.
Result of studies indicate that like evening primrose oil, borage oil is most likely to be effective in treating people with rheumatoid arthritis and
inflammation associated with lupus. The other claims made by supporters of borage oil have been very little studied and so their effect is unknown or have
shown little sign of curing the disease.
The standard dosage of borage oil is between 1,000-1,300 milligrams daily. Experts also recommend that borage oil or GLA supplements be
taken with food since it boosts the absorption of GLA and reduces stomach upset.
Side effects of borage oil include loose stools and upset stomach. Borage may also contain amabiline, which causes liver damage and may be a cancer-causing substance. Because very little is known about borage oil people
who have liver problems, women who are pregnant or nursing, and people taking anticoagulant medications should avoid
it. If you are considering taking
borage oil be sure that you do it under the supervision of a doctor.
