Grapefruit seed extract is a safe herbal infection fighter found to be effective against bacterial and yeast infections
Grapefruit seed extract is used primarily to fight bacterial infections, specifically candida yeast infections. It can be used as an external skin treatment to stop infections of wounds, as an internal treatment in the form of liquid or pill, as a nasal spray or a douche for a yeast infection.
Farmers discovered the ability of grapefruit seed extract to stop mold growth and would rub it on their equipment. Later cosmetic companies
used it as a preservative. Beginning in the 1980’s claims were made that this phytonutrient extract could stop bacterial growth. The nutritional supplement industry
began taking interest in its bacterial infection fighting ability.
It became a popular remedy against yeast infections and an intestinal infection called candida overgrowth syndrome.
It also displayed antifungal properties. However, very little research has been done on grapefruit seed extract and there is
some evidence that it can actually cure infections. Although they are related people often confuse grapefruit seed extract with
grape seed extract benefits.
Grapefruit seed extract is considered safe to take by most people but should not be taken by
those on immunodepressants, drugs that help
lower cholesterol and antihistamines. There is little or no research on side effects
but since it comes from the seeds of grapefruits, a natural herb, they are suspected to be minor.
As with all supplements care should be taken to stay within the
recommended dosage. It is suggested that when trying to kill an infection a dose
of 120 milligrams be taken twice a day. Some people may develop an allergy to the extract, so if you develop a rash or other allergy-like symptoms stop using grapefruit seed extract immediately.
There is also concern that long-term use of grapefruit seed extract can destroy some of the necessary bacteria within the body, especially
those found in the intestinal tract. This happens with prescribed antibiotics as well.
If you experience digestive problems consult with an alternative health doctor who may recommend
oral probiotic supplements which can repopulate the good bacteria within the intestinal tract.
Grapefruit seed extract is also often sold under the name citrus seed
extract.
