Learn the facts about selenium and put it's antioxidant and antiaging properties to work for you by including it with your daily nutrient supplementation

Facts about selenium can be varied and exaggerated. Scientists have only recently begun to understand the effects of selenium. It is known that selenium boosts the immune system, and works as an antioxidant to reduce free radicals within cells making selenium an important supplement in disease prevention.

Selenium is a trace mineral that is found in almost every cell of the body. Specifically, it is found in high amounts in the kidneys, liver, pancreas and spleen. Good sources of this critical nutrient are seafood, poultry and meat, as well as grains such as oats and brown rice.

Benefits Of Selenium

A study completed at the University of Arizona found that this supplement can have a significant effect on reducing cancer risk. It was found that those who took a selenium supplement were 63% less likely to get prostate cancers, 58% less likely to get colorectal tumors, and 46% less likely to get lung cancers. Overall death rate from cancer among those who were supplementing was 39% lower than the average.

As with most antioxidants, it also helps prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Selenium also helps reduce inflammation making it a good treatment for psoriasis, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Selenium deficiency is extremely rare in industrialized countries. Low levels may cause fatigue and weakness. If the body has consistently low levels it could lead to immune system problems, increases risk of cancer and heart disease, and inflammatory problems.

Dosage and Side Effects

It is recommended that women have 55 micrograms of selenium per day and men have 70 micrograms per day. Most people receive this amount from their diet. Selenium is most effective if it is taken with vitamin E. Experts recommend that at least 400 IU of vitamin E be taken daily for best results. When taking selenium supplements the recommended dosage should be strictly followed because at high levels it can be toxic. Symptoms of overdose include hair loss, depression, anxiety, nausea, and vomiting.
