One of the greatest health benefits of flaxseed oil is keeping the heart healthy and has proven very helpful in treating a wide range of illnesses
The
health benefits of flaxseed oil are mainly derived from the high content of
essential fatty acids. This herb, also known as linseed oil, is used to treat a
variety or problems from gastrointestinal problems such as constipation and hemorrhoids to skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
One type of essential fatty acid found in high amounts in flaxseed oil is
omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are also found in fish
and are known to improve heart health and lower cholesterol. One teaspoon of linseed oil has twice as much omega 3 fatty acids than most Americans get in
their daily diet. Omega 6 fatty acids are also found in high amounts in flaxseed oil and provide benefits similar to those of omega 3 fatty acids.
Flaxseed also is a good source of lignans. Lignans seem to help the body with hormone-related problems. Which may be beneficial in treating
cancer and aging problems. Ground flaxseed is very high in fiber and works well in controlling constipation, diverticulosis and hemorrhoids. Essential fatty
acids are also important in keeping skin healthy, which is why the oil is often used to help treat eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne. Flaxseed oil is also
often recommended to people suffering from gout, lupus or fibrocystic breasts,
since it reduces inflammation.
Treatment Dosages
Liquid flaxseed oil must be kept refrigerated and is often cheapest and easiest to use. For treating constipation, 1-2 tablespoons of
ground flaxseed can be added to 8 ounces of water. For heart health, lupus, gout, or skin problems, one teaspoon daily should provide enough essential fatty
acids for treatment. Flaxseed is best absorbed if taken with food. It can also go bad quickly so check the expiration date often and always check for
odor. If a strong smell develops throw it away. Cold-pressed flaxseed oil seems to give none of the healing benefits and is more expensive so avoid this type of
oil. A few people have had allergic reactions to flaxseed oil so be careful when beginning use and seek medical attention if any allergic reaction occurs.
