Glutamine supplements are preferred by athletes to help build more muscle faster

Glutamine is found in high amounts in the blood stream and is a nonessential amino acid. It is called a nonessential amino acid because the body can make more if necessary, however, it is still extremely important to the body for normal functioning. However, most people get plenty through their diet unless they are undergoing strenuous activity. It can be found in a variety of foods including poultry, legumes and fish.

There are some people who are deficient in this amino acid. This includes people who have muscles degenerating or immune depressant diseases. Glutamine is important in building and maintaining muscle and the immune system. It is also essential for proper brain function. Many scientists are currently performing studies to verify if it could aid in such diseases as Alzheimer’s and alcoholism.

Glutamine may also be taken as a bodybuilding supplement. Because it is a muscle food, it is essential for muscle fitness. People who participate in endurance sports may take this dietary supplement to increase physical fitness and strengthen the immune system. Athletes and trainers also use glutamine as an indicator for overexertion. Low levels in the blood stream are caused by too much exercise and can lead to increased infection, reduced mental alertness and fatigue. Many athletes now add a glutamine supplement to their diets to maintain energy and strength; however, many are monitored closely by their health professional. Since side effects are not fully understood don’t begin use as a dietary supplement without first informing your doctor.

Glutamine side effects aren’t well-known due to relatively few studies performed regarding this supplement. Some people reported headaches as a side effect, but little is known about the effects of long-term use. Most experts suggest that glutamine be taken for less than three months. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take glutamine unless their doctor suggests it. There are currently no known drug interactions with glutamine.

Fitness nutrition experts suggest taking the L-glutamine form, since it is absorbed better than the D-glutamine forms.
