Studies indicate that manganese may help in the treatment of myasthenia gravis and increases the efficiency of iron absorption

Manganese is found within the human body as a trace element, meaning that it is only needed in very small amounts. It is essential for bone growth, making ligaments, reproduction, wound healing, skin, brain function and metabolism of cholesterol, sugars, and insulin.

The body stores about 20 milligrams of manganese and only 5 milligrams is needed per day, but deficiencies do occur and can lead to numerous problems. One of these is an acquired disorder known as myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis causes muscle weakness since it causes the autoimmune system to attack the nerve-muscle junction. Often treatment for myasthenia gravis is extreme and involves the removal of the thymus gland. However studies have shown that people with myasthenia gravis who take manganese supplements see improvements in their condition. It is believed that this is because manganese activates numerous enzyme systems within the body.

For treatment of myasthenia gravis it is suggested that 15 milligrams of chelated manganese be taken daily. If manganese sulfate is being taken it is best to increase the dosage to 25 milligrams taken before meals to reduce the risk of it displacing other important trace minerals.

Other problems linked to having too little manganese include bone problems and decreased immune system health. Recent studies have found that having low amounts of this natural mineral increases your chances of having osteoporosis. This is because it is an important catalyst in the growth and maintenance of the bone matrix. Manganese is also important for joint function.

One of the most common dietary mineral supplements is iron. Many people are anemic or iron deficient. Studies have shown that iron and manganese are inextricably linked such that a small amount of manganese given with an iron supplement can help reduce  problems that iron supplements may cause, such as stomach upset. Studies also indicate that by keeping manganese and iron supplements in their proper ratios, less iron is needed to reduce deficiency symptoms. Many mineral supplements are available to help ensure that people are getting enough of these important trace minerals. However consumers should be aware that manganese sulfate, the most common form found in manganese supplements, is not absorbed well by the body, so you may not be getting as much manganese in your mineral supplement as you think.
