As a powerful detoxifier and antioxidant Elderberry has one of the greatest concentrations of Vitamin C found in an herb

Elderberry, known also as simply elder, has been used for centuries as a way to fight respiratory infections. It has one of the highest concentrations of vitamin C found in an herb, and is also known to contain high amounts of flavonoids. This is believed to be the source of elderberries healing properties.

Known as a detoxifier it is also a powerful antioxidant, meaning that it aids the body in protecting cells from damage. It has also long been used as a treatment for colds and flu. Currently it is believed that the reason it helps the body rid itself of these ailments is because it is a diuretic (causes increased urination), and also increases sweating, making it easier for the body to flush out infections. For those suffering from bronchitis, elderberry tea is helpful in relieving coughing and loosening mucus.

The high amounts of flavonoids found in elderberry work as antihistamines and may be beneficial for people suffering from allergies and asthma, but few studies have been performed to verify this therapeutic effect. The flowers of the elderberry plant can be used as a mild astringent allowing the skin to help get rid of eczema and acne. Animal studies are showing that elderberries have anti-inflammatory properties as well, but  has not been well studied in humans.

The berries and flowers of elderberry are the parts used as a medicinal herb. The other parts of the plant may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The stems of the plant actually contain cyanide, a poison and should never be ingested. Elderberries with blue or black berries are the only type used for medicinal purposes. Elderberry is generally safe with few side effects and no known drug interactions. Adults can safely take doses of anywhere from two teaspoons to two tablespoons of black elderberry extract syrup.
